South Africa
South Africa:
Water is essential to life, and waterholes are essential to survival in drought ridden South Africa. In July of 2024, we took our Granddaughters on safari to SA during the dry season. Traveling in the north and northeast of the country, we visited three reserves—Madikwe, Marataba, and Sabi Sands and observed an abundance of species from birds to elephants, from rhinos to lions. Poaching of rhino horns and elephant tusks continue to be a major problem being addressed by each reserve. Progress is being made. One strategy to protect the rhinos is prophylactically removing a rhino’s horns, which like our fingernails will grow back.
